Melvin Chang retired in 2021 from a long career as a primary care physician with the State of Hawaii Department of Health and Straub Clinic and Hospital. He was born and raised in Honolulu and is a graduate of the University of Hawaii and the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2020. Prior to this diagnosis he was active in a Hawaiian music trio entertaining in Waikiki and as a member of the Hawaii Opera Chorus. He served as a medical officer on the Hokule’a’s 2014 World Wide Voyage. He currently enjoys living his best life with his spouse, Sandra, who is a professor of Tropical Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at JABSOM. He particularly appreciates the extended family and grandson that surrounds him in their home in Nu’uanu. He hopes his prior decades of medical experience and recent status as a patient with PD can help HPA have a positive impact on others and their families with this condition.
